In 2012 the Madilika Craft Centre wasn’t generating income for the members, they weren’t working well as a team and the centre lacked sufficient product that appealed to western travelers.
GGI began working with MCC in 2013, and started the MOU in fall 2015. By the end of 2016, revenue had increased 22 times, trust among the members had been restored, and the business began to sustain itself. As revenue soared, MCC began generating enough cash to independently fund raw materials, pay utilities, and share profits with members in the community.
Members opened individual bank accounts and developed a sense of pride and cooperation that has become a source of admiration for the entire community.
Ulusaba maintains one of the most stunning safari lodges in the Sabi Sands. With a passion for the land, the animals, and the people, Ulusaba is deeply committed to empowering the local community. With a shared belief that people are most effectively helped if they are empowered to help themselves, Global Gift Innovators partnered with Ulusaba in building a first of its kind craft centre to ensure sustainability, economic development, financial literacy, and true and lasting dignity of the Shangaan community surrounding Ulusaba.
With construction well underway, the future looks bright for Ulusaba’s newest long-term sustainable gift shop that will create high income return to the community members and provide 15 to 20 high paying jobs to the local community.
